Technology Description

This technology describes two novel probiotic bacterial strains isolated from cattle rumen. Each of the strains have the ability to inhibit the growth of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Streptococcus bovis that are linked to acidosis, liver abscesses, and foot rot in cattle. Invitro studies have shown that feeding these two strains to cattle would not impact the digestibility of the rumen microbes.

Inventive Feature(s)

•  The probiotic strains and their extracts can be used as alternatives to antibiotics
•  The microbes have been isolated from the cattle rumen
•  These probiotics make cattle more resistant to acidosis, liver abscesses & foot rot
•  No effect was observed on feed digestibility in cattle

Benefit(s)

•  Potentially make cattle tolerant to acidosis, liver abscesses & foot rot
•  Alternative to antibiotics by use of natural competitors

Potential Application(s)

•  Livestock industry – Direct fed microbial for cattle and other non-ruminant species (pigs, chicken & turkey) feed
•  Treat human sore throats – Ex: can be added as a probiotic in toothpaste
