Technology Description

Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have developed a method to manufacture high caliber natural cellulosic fibers from sorghum stalks and leaves. These fibers have length, width, strength and elongation features similar to the most common cellulosic fibers such as cotton and linen. Binding materials such as lignin and hemicellulose were partially removed by using a narrow range of alkali concentration, time and temperature of treatment. This optimized process produced fiber bundles with deniers less than 100 and strength between 2 to 3 per denier. These characteristics make these fibers suitable for textile and other applications.

Inventive Feature(s)

•  Method to produce high quality biofibers from sorghum stalks and leaves

•  High Quality – Performance properties of the fibers are similar to cotton and linen fibers
•  Low Cost – Inexpensive chemicals are used for fiber production
•  Green Technology – This technology uses environmentally safe chemicals
•  Value-added Product – Sorghum stalks and leaves which currently go to waste can be used as raw material for fiber production

Potential Application(s)

Textiles and Composites

Intellectual Property

Issued Patent [US7,887,672]
